Tripoli: the capital

is an ancient walled city with many places to explore including:
traditional mosques, souks and Khans.(public houses)

Assai al Hamra (Red Castle)

is a fortress close to Tripoli, with a maze of courtyards and buildings
The Jamahiriya museum next door is worth looking at too.

Benghazi

is the second largest city and is home to Greek and Byzantine graves from an underwater city.

Archeological Sites

Cyrene was home to the Greek town of Cyrenacia, with ruins of temples, forts, gymnasiums, and theatres.

Leptis Magna are the well preserved remains of a roman settlment.  Including the Severan Arch (erected in honour of Emperor Septimus Severus), the marble- and granite-lined Hadrianic Baths, a detailed basilica, and an amphitheatre.

Ghadames

is a desert oasis town whichwas a popular tourist spot for local people.  The old town is an interestin network of alleyways.
