Armagh
is an ancient cathedral city, the first recorded inhabitants in the area date back to 4,500 BC.
St Patricks Roman Catholic cathedral:
is situated on a hillside overlooking the city. The steps to the front are a good place to orientate yourself with the city. The buildling has imposing twin spires and was started in 1840, completion was in 1904.
St Patricks Church of Ireland Cathedral:
is said to be at the location of the first stone church built by st patrick in 445. the presnet building dates from the 13th century in places. There has been much restorartion and rebuilding over the years with the last alterations and additions being in 1834. http://www.stpatricks-cathedral.org/
Navan centre & Fort:
navan fort is a large circular earthwork, around 240m in diameter. the site has been identified as WEmain macha, the headquarters and sacred place of a military dynasty, the so-called Red Branch knights, ruled by Conchobar mac Nessa who was advised by the druid Cathbad and championed by CuChulainn, the Hound of Ulster. The centre explains the significance of the site and the history and folklore behind it.
St Patricks Trian Centre:
is a good family day out. The interactive exhibit has three main areas;
The Armagh story from before the arrival of saint patrick to the modern day;
The Book of Armagh, this early christian manuscript written in 1807, tells of St Patricks time in the city. Interactive computer displays allow you to find out about the book; The Land of Lillput, tells the story of jonathan Swift and Gullivers Travels, with the help of a 20ft giant http://www.saintpatrickstrian.com/
Armagh Friary:
the franbsciscan friary was established in 1263/64 by Archbishop O'Scannell. It is the longest monastry in Ireland.
