City Centre Attractions
Lynch's Castle: is a fine example of a medieval town house, the facade features several coats of arms including that of King Henry VIII. the buliding is now a branch of the allied Irish Bank and in the vestibule are display boards depicting the history of the house.
Collegiate Church of St Nicholas: is largest functioning medieval church in the country., legend has it that Christopher Columbus prayed here.
Eyre Square:
has several sculptures and monuments, and the Browne doorway, a carved entrance dating from 1627. Parts of the medieval town walls have been incorporated into the Eyre Square shopping centre.
The Claddagh and Claddagh Ring:
the claddagh was a former fishing community on the west bank of the river. the Claddagh ring, which symbolises a hope of eternal love and friendship were originally heirlooms handed down the female line. How the ring was worn showed whether a girl was engaged or available for marriage. the small museum showing the Claddagh community and artifacts is in a small museum at the corner of Cross street.
