Cameroon: Getting There & Getting around |
Getting thereAir Cameroon is the national airline, they operate flights to the UK. Douala (DLA) is the main international airport. The airport is 10km from the city, but taxis are available. A departure tax is applicable on international flights. Cross border rail travel is difficult as neighbouring countries operate on a different rail gauge. there are plans to change the system. There are road connections to Chad, the Central African Republic, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon and Nigeria. Travel on these routes is rough, and should not be attempted in the rainy season. The border with the Congo is closed. |
Getting AroundThere are daily flights between Yaounde and Douala, this is the quickest and most reliable way to travel. CAMRAIL or Cameroon Railways provides a reliable but relatively slow service to most larger towns in the country. Traffic drives on the right, there are tarred roads between most major centres. Otherwise roads are generally impassable in the rainy season. There is also a danger of hijacking. Plus and this counts for any form of road travel including buses, the level of road safety interms of driving standards are low. Vehicle accidents are common. |
