Soweto, an acronym for South– Western Townships, is Johannesburg’s siamese-twin city and a place of marked contrasts. It has one of the highest rates of murder and rape in the world, some of South Africa’s most desperate poverty and its most nihilistic youth. Despite this, it is also the country’s richest and most political township. Soweto consists of 26 individual townships, each of which was designed to be independent. The township of Soweto as a whole could be called multiracial, in the sense that its residents are from all the tribes in South Africa. |
