Salzburg City

Salzburg's "Old Town" with its world famous baroque architecture was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997. It is the birthplace of Mozart and currently has 3 universities.  Sites to see include:

Hohensalzburg Fortress: is the city's most famous landmark, started over 900 years ago as a refuge fir the citys archbishops.  the fortress is now the largest and best preserved fortification in western europe. Walking around the ramparts provides stunning city views.

Dom Kirche: There has allegedly been a religious or sacred site where the current Dom or cathedral since celtic and roman times.  A cathedral has been on the site since 1167, although previous structures have succummbed to fire as well as other disasters.  The building which can be viewed now is a renaissance structure and has imressive ceiling frescos, some of which depict the history fo the city.

GetreideGasse: now the most fashionable ( and expensive) shopping area of the city, is also teh street in which Mozart was born.

The Salzkammergut

Austria's Lake district, the area is one of spectacular scenery and glacier carved troughs.  Watersports are very popular with windsurfing, water skiing and just swimming being high on the agenda, but as the paeks are not as stepp or high as further south, hill walking and mountain biking are also poular.

Wolfgangersee and Hallstattersee are the two most accessible lakes, Bad Ischl is a good base for visiting both.  The train travels from here to Hallstatt and buses run to St Wolfgang. 
Another village in the region is St Gilgen. The village is located on the shores of the Wolfgangersee and boats sail from here around the lake, affording majestic views. the village was the home of Mozarts grandfather and birth place of his mother.

Bad Gastein

Is located in the centre of the Hohe Tauern National Park, (in the Salzburg province) and is more than 1000m above sea level. It is a spa town and hosted the 1958 ski championships.

Kaprun

Is situated in the district of Zell Am See at the foot of the Kitzsteinhorn Glacier, it is the site of a major power plant.

Leogang

Situated in Salzburgerland, surrounded by magnificent mountains at an altitude of 800 meters between Zell am See and St Johann in Tyrol and is just a one hour drive away from Salzburg or Kufstein. The town covers a large area, away from all the traffic routes and is completely surrounded by serene alpine meadows.

Zell Am See

is a lakeside winter ski resort in the state of Salzburg.  The town has boat trips available on the lake lake and is a market town.
